Viagra turns thirteen

27th March this day in 1998, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug Viagra, Later that year; it was approved for sale on the European market by the European Commission.

The main ingredient of Viagra – the chemical sildenafil – was initially being trialled as a treatment for angina. But researchers at Pfizer soon found that, while sildenafil had nominal effect on angina patients, it was highly effective at inducing erections. The reaction took about an hour, a little longer if the pill was taken after eating fatty foods. Seeing the economic opportunity in such a biochemical effect, Pfizer decided to market the drug for male impotence also know as erectile dysfunction.

When Viagra was first marketed, erectile dysfunction was a condition that was under-recognised by most members of the public. So in order to increase awareness, Pfizer recruited ex-US Presidential candidate Bob Dole to act as a spokesperson for Viagra in advertisements. This post would later also be filled by the Brazilian football legend Pele.

The popularity of Viagra would eventually inspire Pfizer’s competitors to create their own erectile dysfunction treatments. The first of these to be approved was Levitra, which was co-marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Bayer and Schering-Plough in August 2003. In October 2003 another erectile dysfunction medication called Cialis, marketed by GSK, was approved.

All three erectile dysfunction medications have been used by millions of men worldwide. Viagra sales in 2010 alone were around $1.9 billion. Next year Pfizer will face an important milestone – the expiration of Viagra’s American patent. In parts of the world where Viagra does not have a valid patent, such as China, genetic versions of Viagra are already available under names such as Kamagra and Caverta. Once the US patent is up (providing Pfizer is unable to obtain an extension), generic versions of Viagra may begin to become a significant rival to the branded drug.

A Pfizer office worker stole over £150,000 from her bosses to fund and expensive Lifestyle.

Carol Jones who was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court along with her husband for 19 months for stealing Viagra to fund holidays and spending sprees.

Apparently her husbands business was struggling but the couple managed to have a lifestyle like of “Keeping up with the Joneses”, Manchester Crown Court heard.

But they were caught out in spring 2007 when bosses at Pfizer became suspicious of why money had vanished.

Jones kept her husband “under the radar” while working with him to get payment from Pfizer for overpriced work. The couple also billed a firm responsible for facilities management for “phantom” work Pfizer had already paid for.

The couple, of Winsford, Cheshire, were convicted of false accounting, deception and fraud. Jones was jailed for 16 months and her husband for 19 months.

Effects of Viagra

So far Viagra has been the biggest seller of all medication year upon year, and it never seems to be to far out of the news some way or another.

So far this year, we have had Dogs & babies saved my taking Viagra tablets for heart conditions, women being able to get pregnant when unable before from taking Viagra UK all good things so far.

But there have been reports this year of things turning out not so well for people who have tried Viagra. For example take the man who tried to much viagra and his vision went blue, pretty annoying hey.

Or new reports coming out that you can now go deaf from taking Viagra, well atleast you wont have to hear the wife going on…

And last of all the German rocker who went on a weekend booze, women & Viagra binge and couldn’t see straight for days afterwards, not to convinced about that one I would imagine other factors like drugs & alcohol came in to play.

But there has also been some good news for the women to shout about, female Viagra is on the horizon.

Viagra UK

Viagra was founded over ten years ago now and originally was used for studied for high blood pressure & angina.

It was later found after many studies and clinics trials that one of the side effect included getting an erection. This was then explored and Viagra was born.
